Unlike its counterparts, the 70th regiment served in an official capacity in both the North and South Islands, sent to maintain order in gold crazed Dunedin before returning to fight in Taranaki and the Waikato in mid-1863. Utilising data from the 70th regiment WO12 muster rolls and the Otago Police Gazette (1861-1864) the map below plots instances of death, desertion, discharge and arrest, providing a spatial insight into the regiment’s term of service in New Zealand.
